Question by Ask Mike: Have you ever invented your own strange recipe? Like a “food experiment”?
When I was a kid, I loved to come up with my own “food experiments.” Ketchup and Wheaties, for example. Or syrup and yogurt with a few M&M’s for taste.
Do you have any “unusual recipes” that you like to make?

i tried once. it was titled “the thing” and consisted of flour, one egg, carrots, and chocolat chips. it had the consistancy of rubber and tasted horrible. my step dad made it though a whole piece somehow before we told him we knew it was gross! how nice was that?
oh it did bounce…….
When I was in ninth grade I had a great friend that i use to spend Saturday nights with and she came up with a recipe for the can meat that the government use to give out. we would chop it up and add tomatoes, lettuce and barbeque sauce, and bake it. God I miss those good old days! We would spend the whole night eating and talking about boys.
Yes! My mom always asks me “Why do you like to experiment so much?” eventually after years of experimenting she said I was wasting materials and supplies lol. I’ve experimented alot with my blender! Also adding different things to already established recipes. It gives me a great feeling when I can come up with something that’s really satisfying! =] x
Yes, Mike. I am ALWAYS combining my food. Usually, it involves everything on my plate. It can be anywhere from sausage with french fries to cheese with ranch dressing. But my favorites would be mac & cheese with hot dogs, mac & cheese with mashed potatoes, and literally a select few types of sauce on virtually anything.

I tried to make stew when I was younger. I knew nothing of soup bases or soup stock. So….I took water threw in what ever I could find in the house, bread, bologna, other misc food items and a lot of what was sold as “Krazy Salt” back then for flavor. It was called hit or miss stew and more often than not I missed. The only onet hat would it eat was my grandfather and he said it was too salty. lol
Fritos in a bowl and topped with French Dressing….it rocks….
I alos make tuna with mayo, diced pickles, onions, celerty..some salt and pepper, addd to bread with a shredded cheddar and a handful of crushed doritos…..OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I like corn flakes and weiners….I forget how I came up with that one but I will still eat it even as an adult. Also french fries dpped in a Wendy’s chocolate frosty.
No that’s pretty strange to tell you the truth…
I eat ruffles(cheddar) hot cheetos with pickle juice
I like experimenting with food. Otherwise, new recipes would never be discovered. I was able to just toss a bunch of ingredients in a pot and made a super delicious soup. Everyone loves it when I make it that way. It’s usually gone in 2 days.
At a lark I once put mustard on cantaloupe before. It was super spicy for some reason. I guess the sweetness of the melon brought out the inner spiciness of the mustard. It wasn’t Dijon or anything…
Syrup and yogurt is a good mix especially if you make your own yogurt.
We like smoothies in the summer. I never use a recipe. I just pull out the blender and pour in a cup of yogurt. I start tossing in whatever fruit I have on hand. I sweeten with a little honey and thin it with a little milk if necessary. If you like icy smoothies, freeze some milk in an ice cube tray and drop in a few cubes.
I fried chicken with a crushed Ritz cracker coating when I realized I was out of flour. Now I use that coating deliberately on occasion. It’s pretty good on breaded pork chops too. After I’d done this a couple of times, I found a recipe in an old cookbook. So, I guess it wasn’t all that original.
Way back when I was in junior high school, my best friend and I fried up some breaded dill pickle slices and pickled beets. They were pretty terrible as I remember but neither of us would admit it at the time.
i do and drinks to….i dont like to follow receipes
Chunky Peanut Butter with bacon on toast. It’s best when the peanut butter is applied to still hot toast to melt. Crispy bacon works best. Not so unusual to me, but I’m surprised that no one I mention it to seems to have tried it?
I have a recipe I’ve been making for years, which I call “Dog Food.” All you do is combine a can of refried beans and a can of corn in a saucepan, stick it on the stove on medium heat for about five minutes (I suppose you could microwave it; I’ve never bothered to try) then dump in some Frank’s Red Hot hot sauce, and if you have it, maybe a little sour cream, and voila. It’s very yummy, if you’re into that sort of thing, and a good, cheap, healthy dinner (it’s even vegetarian!) but it does look like dog food….hence the name.
Musnaz , its grate on sandwiches .Two parts mayo and one
part mustard. Try it you’ll like
omg Peanut Butter and String Cheese Sandwiches were my favorite as a kid
i lovegrahamcrackers with ond oreos crunched up in a bowl with milk also one person said ritz for chicken breading try tims jalopeno chips too omg
I used to make animal pancakes with different things mixed in to make eyes and mouths, such as raisins, chocolate chips, apple slices and banana slices. I have made cars for small children to eat from bananas and peanut butter, celery sticks and raisins, chocolate and butterscotch chips and many other fun things. I made an island using vegetables and fruit for a party last year. Yes, playing with food is fun!
Peanut butter and Jelly Salami sandwiches.
Peanut butter, jelly and Italian or Genoa salami on top. Pretty tasty. I have numerous recipes I have invented.. so to speak, in my kitchen the cook book are just a point of departure, really, I never stick with the recipes. But that’s a strange one. I have converted some in my family to that sandwich.
Frosted flakes with peanut butter and honey/syrup.
I grew up poor, so one of my favorite snacks was mustard, and mayo sandwiches.
but as I got older, and married with children.
my wife worked the evening shift at the hospital, and I had to cook for the kids
needless to say that my wife and kids, had a lot of laughs at my cooking.
but eventually I did get better, and I developed a dish that to this day when i go to visit my son he ask me to make my chili pie.
One things I’ve always loved is warmed marinara sauce (whatever your favorite red pasta sauce is) to dip bananas in. Ohh it’s soooo good!! People tell me it sounds so gross and that I’m weird for even trying that never mind actually enjoying it. It really is good though. Try it!!
When I was younger I used to make this really simple “sandwich” after school as a snack between meals. It was bread (not toasted), two slices of cheese with mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. It’s simple (and gross to some people) but it was always satisfying. Plus it was simple and quick, can’t beat that.

Peanut Butter and American Cheese on Wonder bread! This is the “poor” students staple because it actual is nutritious while being very inexpensive. I can fill gap in your stomach and the gap in your wallet while waiting for the next check to arrive.
I will still have one to this day!!
not for food…but i like making my own version of a tequila sunrise: slushie style-a dozen multi-tropical popsicals blended with half a bottle of tequila.
Will make a receipe according to directions first time, then my way.
Would call these experiments ” Elephant Ears ” until decided if a keeper or not.
String cheese dipped in melted chocolate and melon.
If I really want to settle in with a good book, just chunk up some cheese`s-like local handmade Italian,pieces/ curls of different dark chocolates, and then cantaloupe-honeydew thin slices -or sometimes mango or papaya chunks ..put a generous amount of Bruschette on the plate and there you go !

well it sounds rubbish but i luv all the flavors
then there is cottage cheese and chicken and topped with banana!!
there are more ridiculous recipes but these for now
I would, I know, this isn’t very creative…
But I’d put vanilla essence in my milk, and then put sugar in on top of that… then either cream or ice cream… It’s really good… just not that creative…
Then there’s Milo (chocolate energy stuff for milk), and once it’s been made I’d put custard in with it… hmm… yummy.
food experemment okay have food cook
No but it sounds fun!
Philly Cream Cheese & Famous Amos Chocolate Chip cookies. It’s like a mini cheesecake.
O yea, I’ve experimented with items that were just sitting around and I’ve need to get rid of. But strangely, they were edible and good too. Though the only problem is they were spur of the moment and I have no idea how I did it =P It was fun.
Kraft Dinner with (Kraft) Catalina Salad Dressing.
I have made peanut butter sandwiches with onion slices, and peanut butter sandwiches with banana slices. Both were good, altho I never tried pb +o + b in the same sandwich.
Well, not certain that I can beat “wheaties and ketchup” but my cousin and I used to spent most of our summers making up “recipes”….my aunt’s only condition was that we had to eat whatever we made and sometimes that was a challenge….that being said…our actual favorite, that we both still eat, is raspberry jam and sweet pickle sandwiches. You also might want to know that I had my own cafe for many years….lol…scarey, huh?
try a fluffernutter… not mine but it is tasty… peanut butter and melted marshmellow sandwhich
No, But i Can Try
My mom came up with a “strange” recipe when I was just a little girl and she didn’t know what to make with what was around the house.
It’s about a cup of cool water, a sprinkle of corn starch to thicken and soy sauce to taste. Once it has been whisked together. You put a drained can of green (french style or regular) beans and a couple cut up weiners into a stirfry pan. Cook on medium until warmed (if you wanna do the weiners first to brown them, you can). Add the sauce until the whole meal looks like it’s got a warm thick gravy. It looks and sounds disgusting but it tastes fabulous!!!
My mom also used to put ketchup on cottage cheese. Yet another dish she told me not to knock it until I tried it. (I love it now too!)
Molasses & butter, melted in the micro, and poured over apples.
yummy :]
Coconut fried chicken
I used flaked coconut instead of bread crumbs after the egg wash, pan fried–it was good
I don’t think this is really strange but whenever we have our thanksgiving dinner I take everything (including cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes) and put it in a roll and eat it.
my Grandmother always had these giant cracker things called Matzo’s, and my dad always scrambled eggs to eat on top of the cracker.. but as i grew older i started to improve upon his idea by mixing up the crackers into the egg and then added syrup to the finished product, it sounds gross but the crackers don’t get soggy they stay crisp.. with a kind of a sweet and salty combination…YUMMY!! my kids love it!!
have a great day:@)
I experimented with a gumbo I like to call Alphabet Gumbo. I include food from every letter of the alphabet, and every one of the five food groups. I even found a site on the internet that lists foods alphabetically.
I had to do a Y!A search for the letter X, and it worked!
Mix the following ingredients in a sauce pan
1 cup of ketchup…
2 table spoon of sugar
5 table spoon of soy sauce
2 table spoon of salt
2 1/2 cups of vinegar
3 table spoon of parmesan cheese….
5 table spoon of baking soda…
5 packets of instant oatmeal.. =)
mix them in a sauce pan…under medium heat… add a little bit of corn syrup.. mix and mix together… cook until boiling…
once boiling.. remove from heat.. let sit until it warms a little bit…put in the refrigerator but do not freeze!
check the next day… you’ll have a foot scrub….
My ex made the best scrambled eggs in the world. Her secret ingredient? Soy sauce!
Whatever you do, don’t make pancakes in a wok and don’t make omelette with meusli.
My little brother like to mix Catalina dressing with a can of tuna and eat it on top of Ritz. Ewwwwww I say, I’ll stick with peanut butter in tomato soup and Ranch Doritos dipped in cottage cheese. YUM!!
ramen noodles with cream of mushroom soup. Quite often for dinner I will make kielbasa or hotdogs if no kielbasa in a skillet and when i have no seasoning use bbq or ketchup… it has a great taste after its been heated. tuna fish and jelly go awesome too
